COHIBA CUBAN CIGAR BRAND & HISTORY
Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.
It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret but now world famous El Laguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.
Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.
The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of the cigar.
The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of the selection" from the five finest Vegas Finas de Primera in the San Juan y Martinez and San Luis zones of the Vuelta Abajo region.
Uniquely amongst Habanos two of Cohiba's filler leaves, the seco and ligero, undergo a third fermentation in barrels, which adds smoothness to the blend.
Developed initially as a medium bodied protocol cigar for presentation only by officials of the Cuban government,Cohiba was marketed widely beginning in 1982. The initial sizes were the Lancero, the Corona Especiale and the Panetela, with the Esplendido, Robusto and Exquisito added in 1989.
In 1992,in salute to the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the Caribbean,
the Siglo series was introduced. The Cohiba series was initially made in the El Laguito factory in Havana, but production is now also in the Fernando Perez German factory.
Cohiba encompasses four different Lineas or Lines. First there is the Linea Clasica whose six sizes were introduced between 1966 and 1989. Then there is the Linea 1492, five sizes of which were launched in 1992 to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of Columbus's arrival in Cuba before one further size, the iconic Siglo VI, was added in 2002.
The Linea Maduro 5 consisting of three sizes each wrapped in dark maduro leaves specially aged for five years was launched in 2007.And most recently, the Linea Behike, whose three sizes made their debut in 2010, was added as the most exclusive line of all. In its filler blend it uses the rare medio tiempo leaf, which is found only amongst some of the top two leaves of sun-grown tobacco plants and brings an exceptional richness to the taste of the Habanos.
Through such constant innovation, Cohiba has held its position at the leading edge of the cigar world. It was also the first Habanos brand to offer a Reserva cigar in 2002 and a Gran Reserva in 2009 made with tobaccos specially aged for a minimum of three and five years respectively.
All Cohiba sizes are Tripa Larga , Totalmente a Mano- long filler, totally hand made.

COHIBA CUBAN CIGARS
The first Cohiba cigars were manufactured under Ernesto Che Guevara's distinction,
in the 60's, when he had the position of Minister of Industries, in the newly born
revolutionary Cuban government.Che selected the most outstanding specialists in terms of habanos, as Avelino Lara and Eduardo Rivero, from Larraranaga.
The production of the very first tree models began in 1968: the Lanceros (great panatella),
the special Coronas (corona) y the Panatellas (cigarettes despite their name). However, it commercialization began in 1982 with an immediate success. Later on, two new series were launched, having the required qualities to have a softer cigar.
The Classic Branch was introduced in 1989, which included the Esplendido (Churchill), the Robustos (Robustos) and the Exquisito (Panatella); in 1992 was introduced the 1492 branch, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Colombus' first arrival to Cuba.
There are five models of the 1492 branch: the so called 1st.Century (tiny corona), the 2nd
Century (petit corona), 3rd Century (corona) 4th Century (large corona) and 5th Century (Lonsdale). There are two distinct Lineas (Lines) of Cohiba: the medium to full flavoured Linea Clasica introduced between 1966 and 1989; and the medium flavoured Linea 1492 brought out in 1992 to mark the 500th Anniversary of Columbusís epic voyage of discovery.
Ten years later in 2002, a new size, the Siglo VI, was added to the Linea 1492.
The origin of the word Cohiba is on the name the Cuban aborigines gave to the rustic roll they prepared with its leaves. At the arrival of Colombus in 1492 they already knew and used the tobacco plant.
The tobacco used for the manufacturing of this line is very special. The Cohiba is not a major production, considering it is a particular Habano. It is very limited due to the quality
of the harvest.
The tobacco is harvested in Fine Vegas(plantations),selected in Vuelta Abajo, Pinar del Rio province).Especially in the Vegas el Corojo is produced a soft cape of a fine texture and light
color. In terms of the fillers, it uses the best leaves of the best fine sunny plantations in Pinar del Rio, from san Luis and San Juan. Another of the characteristic of the Cohiba is the so called "third fermentation".It consists in a special process of slight fermentation and aging.
This branch is commercialized in Spain,France,Swiss,Great Britain,Benelux,Hong Kong,Mexico,
Argentina, Germany, Canada, Brazil the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East. The Cohiba cigars are manufactured in El Laguito,(this factory also produces Trinidad),and it has the reputation to hire the best rollers of the region. It also employs a group of quality control to examine constantly the different cigars, in every of the phases of production.
